Golden Rule - Do Good part 2

Doing good to others, otherwise known as the more popular phrase "acts of kindness" or even more popular lately is the term "random acts of kindness." Huh, I even ran across a non-profit organization whose sole purpose is promoting the later.

Here's a cute little personal story about a very random act of kindness. My son was quite young, 3 maybe, and he, the other kids, and I were at the local Dairy Queen splurging on a meal out for some special reason or another. We had finished our food and were enjoying our ice cream treats. My little one noticed a man alone, contentedly reading the newspaper, that had finished his meal. With as much empathy as a toddler can muster, he asked why the man didn't have ice cream. I told him that I didn't know why. He felt so sorry for the guy not "getting to have a treat" he turned to him and holding out his own child sized cone offered, "Want a lick?" I believe the man was touched. I know I was.

My little boy personally knew what made him happy and he wanted others to share in that happiness. The beautiful simplicity of a child... "he was letting his light shine" in pure innocence, pure love for others.

If you look back one post to "What is love?" (Feb. 14) I began to explain what I believe to be true about the reason behind doing good - which is love - Christ's love that is in us when we accept Him as our Lord and Savior. After I posted that entry, I have since come across so much more about this "Doing good" part of the Golden Rule.

"If you do good to those who are good to you, what thanks do you deserve? Even 'sinners' do that." Luke 6:33 ISV

I'd now like to take a closer look at the "what is" or the "how to" do(ing) good. There is SO MUCH scripture in the Bible about doing good or doing what is right so I'm going to try to sum it up the best that I can for you. Basically what God wants from us is to further the work that His Son, Jesus, started during His ministry. What did Jesus "do" during his walk on this earth? First, let's not forget 1 John 3:16 from part 1 of doing good ("What is love?") "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers." He also healed the sick and the broken, fed the people, taught the Truth about salvation and eternal life, had compassion on the lame, the possessed, the sinner, the poor and the learned to name just a few things.

The gospel of Matthew tells us both the what and the how (ch. 25:35-40):

"For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me. Then the righteous will answer Him, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' The King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.'"

Jesus would do all of these things and more and He expects us to continue this work of love in our lives today to show His light for all men to see. Jesus wants us to let our "little light shine" so that others will wonder about the source of our peace and joy and want what we have.

There's a song by Addison Road called "This Little Light of Mine" (paste this in your browser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVeB7ACVgO0) and it has a few lines in it that speak about this opportunity to share your light or your good work before others:

May you live each day with no regret
Make the most of every chance you get

Brave the dark and let my little light shine

There's a little light inside us all

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16

These good deeds are NOT to be done in a public way for our own honor (thanks or credit) but with humility for the glory of God. Our "good attitude" is not our own, it is a gift of grace that God gives us through the Holy Spirit in us as Christians. We are to love on the "sinner" especially to further the Kingdom of God.

"Live such good lives among the pagans (unbelievers - my addition) that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us." 1 Peter 2:12

"The day he visits us" may possibly be the day when God visits a person with salvation (when they receive their call to accept or deny Christ as their Lord and Savior). The believer's good life may then influence the unbeliever to repent and believe. Yes!, by leading a God pleasing life and doing good to others you may just have that kind of eternal impact on one or many of God's children that are currently lost.

"For we are God's workmanship (the Greek for this means "work of art"), created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." (God's sovereign purpose and plan for our lives) Ephesians 2:10

Again the thanks in this verse (Luke 6:33) is referring to credit. We are to love our neighbor by doing good or serving them, not for our credit but for God's glory. If you'd like more ideas of how to do good to your neighbor or your enemy (which are all formed in God's image) have a look at Titus chapter 3 in your Bible. It's loaded with rich direction. Here's a sample:

"Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order that they may provide for daily necessities and not live unproductive lives." Titus 3:14

As Christ followers, we are chosen by Him to do His good work also known as bearing fruit. John shares the following words of Jesus with us in his gospel; "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit - fruit that will last (good works that prove evidence of faith in Christ in all that believe). Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. This is my command: Love each other." John 15:16-17

Let us give God thanks for sending His Only Son down from heaven to become a man, a teacher, a Savior, a perfect, sinless example of how to do good to all of God's children.

"And be thankful." Colossians 3:15b

What is love? - Do Good part 1

What IS love? When I "Googled" it, here's what I got:
love

an intense feeling of deep affection.
"babies fill parents with intense feelings of love"
    synonyms:deep affection, fondnesstendernesswarmthintimacyattachment,endearmentMore

  2. 2.
a person or thing that one loves.
"she was the love of his life"

verb
  1. 1.
feel a deep romantic attachment to (someone).

Today is Valentine's Day. The day dedicated to love. The definitions above are what my computer told me love is. Here is what my Bible tells me love is:

"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers." 1 John 3:16

I find it so interesting that this verse, 1 John 3:16, is also referring to the intense love of Christ as does the well-known verse, John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." That's our God of divine order and plan for ya.

This 1 John verse works right into the next verse of thanks that I've been looking at for weeks.

"If you do good to those who are good to you, what thanks do you deserve? Even 'sinners' do that." Luke 6:33 ISV

Continuing on in pursuit of understanding the Golden Rule as defined by the Bible and by Christ's standards, we are to do good to our neighbor. Laying down our lives for our brothers - our neighbors - would be the highest level of doing good in my book.

Faith expressing itself through love, by doing good, keeps us right with God. Expressing love (God's love) through acts of kindness is putting the "walk with the talk".

"The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." Galatians 5:6b

"For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, "You shall LOVE your neighbor as yourself." Galatians 5:13-14

By doing good to those that you don't really want to share your efforts with, the lesser, the 'sinner', the unlovely, the outcast... well, that's being a true Christian. That's living and loving like Christ.

"He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: 'I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me." Matthew 18:2-5

In my Bible Study Fellowship lesson on Matthew 18 this week we learned that a little child isn't limited to the literal meaning, but to anyone that is thought of as lesser, weaker, more humble, vulnerable, or in need. And the former: "become like little children", is to be humble, quick to forgive, and have a deep desire to obey God and to serve God.

We can very well serve God by doing good. There is a song by Jason Gray that tells of this concept of loving so wonderfully. It's called "With Every Act of Love" and there's a line in it that says, "God made a million million doors for His love to walk through. One of those doors is YOU!" - copy and paste this link into your browser to see the YouTube video - it's a great song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4bB7BUxBbY

So we learn that the ultimate love is to lay down your life for others, as Christ did for us. As we work out our faith toward this ultimate level we love by serving others - or doing good as our Luke verse tells us to do. This doing good allows Christ's love to shine through your open door. In obedience, your service will bring praise or thanks to God, and that, my friends, is true love.

"This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." 1 John 4:10

Happy Valentine's Day!

Things Are Lookin' Up

Some of you dear ones have been praying for my circumstances. You have been helping me carry the burdens that have been weighing me down lately. You have been bending the ear of our Great God on High on my behalf. For that I am incredibly grateful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Though I haven't seen the tangible results of our pleas as of yet, I have received a great gift today. A gift of understanding and assurance. This brings peace to my aching soul and as one of my lovely friends said "the beautiful smile" has returned to my face.

Words of encouragement have been sent to me by many of you - they are also gifts from our Heavenly Father. Our protector and provider. You are each angels in the flesh for sharing your peace giving and uplifting words. Today a new angel joined the team in the form of a navigator. She helped me with the giant burden of health insurance coverage. My hubbie and I have been without coverage for six years due to being denied each year by the kids' provider. My sweet angel navigator just helped me through the process and we are now to be covered at a price we can afford! Praise the Lord for an answered prayer!!

Some of the sweet words that have helped me understand where I've been (in this darkness) are from my favorite author, Sarah Young, in her devotional Jesus Today.

When you are feeling overwhelmed by your circumstances, take time to listen to Me. Hear Me saying, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
Listening to Me when you're feeling stressed requires discipline and trust. Your racing thoughts make it hard to hear My gentle whisper. Ask the Holy Spirit to calm your mind so that you can hear My voice. Remember that I  - the Prince of Peace - am with you at all times.
I am not only with you; I am also in your circumstances. Moreover, I am in control of everything that happens to you. Although I am never the author of evil, I am fully able to use bad things for good. This does not remove your suffering, but it does redeem it - infusing it with meaning. So if you are in a storm of difficulties, I say to you, "Take courage. It is I." Search for signs of My abiding Presence in your current situation. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.

"Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." Matthew 14:27

"After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper." 1 Kings 19:12

"For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6

"You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for me with all your heart." Jeremiah 29:13

After reading this, in my quiet time this morning, I had to confess to the Lord. "Forgive me, God, for not being joyful always, not praying continually; and not giving thanks in all circumstances, which is Your will for me in Christ Jesus." (prayer based on 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Then my gracious God gave me more as I studied and did my homework for my Bible Study Fellowship class. We are studying Matthew 17 this week. The verse that God made shine like the noonday sun and brought so very alive in His living Word for me today was Matthew 17:20. "He replied, 'Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." This is not a new verse for me... but it sure felt new today.

The devotional that is based on this verse in my Mom's Devotional Bible is called When Mountains Won't Move:

Mothers face mountains all the time. Heaps of laundry. Mounds of applesauce on tables. Towers of wooden blocks. And the unconquered heights of potty-training. How are we to respond?
Jesus tells us to respond with faith. With faith all things are possible. When we surround ourselves with proof of God's control over our days, our spirits are lifted and most mountains do, in fact, move.
And when they won't? When it's 9:30 at night and we're still stumbling through toppled blocks on our way to throw in another load of wash - what then? When the mountains don't move, we can respond with perspective, knowing that we are living in a season of life today that will change tomorrow. These mountains will pass - and others will take their place, like the mountain of trusting a teenager to drive or date, or the mountain of our child's college, career and mate decisions.
When the mountains won't move, we can hold tight to the God who is in control and let him lead us through these days, picking the path around the mountains to the other side.

Praise the Lord that I am no longer trying to conquer mountains of potty-training!! Amen?! But I am entering the later (trusting a teenager). I am so thankful that God allowed me to see the light today, the light of his sovereignty. Sometimes the things that we know, that we know, that we know don't make complete sense until we've stumbled around for awhile in the dark.

Thank you, again, to those of you that have been my cheerleaders and have been holding me up and pointing me in the right direction... to God Almighty. The God who is in control. The God who shows us the path around the mountain. The God who gives us courage when we are too weak and blind to know that we need Him more than we think we do. The God who is eternally patient with me when my faith is wavering and I don't understand. He gives me grace and I sure do need that.

Pastor Lloyd Bustard sings about it here in this song called Grace. The beginning lyrics of this song took me in big time. Have a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2TlWu0_vL4

I'm still working on the Golden Rule - Doing Good. Please be patient with me as I find the words.

"And be thankful." Colossians 3:15b
